Chapter 7

Victoria

My pen flies across my sketchpad, designs pouring out of me. Yesterday we ordered food, had sex, watched some television, and had more sex. It was honestly one of the best days of my life. I didn’t even check in at the office.

Today we’re meeting with my dad, an appointment I confirmed with his assistant last night. I haven't talked to my dad yet, not since before I went to the lakehouse actually. This is something I need to explain in person. I just pray he has some answers for us.

I look at the other side of the bed and see Kent fast asleep. The last two nights have been rough, horrifying nightmares plaguing him. I ached for him, but all I could do was hold him. Moving hair from his face, I see the scar along his cheek and can't imagine him having to deal with this on his own in his cabin. I'm glad to be here to take care of him now, something I never thought I’d say about a man, and that’s when I finally figured out what the feeling surging inside me was - I love him. And he sees the real me through my sass and bitchiness. I’m tired of fighting my heart; I’d much rather just be with him.

Kent groans as he opens his eyes, then they find me, and with a voice rough from sleep he says, "Morning, beautiful.”

“Hey. How are you feeling?”

“Better now that I see you.” I know that’s a lie because he’s still exhausted and his skin is pale. He needs food and more sleep. “How's work?” He asks, sitting up.

I show him my sketches. “I think you’d look amazing in that,” he says, and I laugh.

“You said that about every single one,” I remind him with an elbow to his side.

“Because it’s true.”

“I’ll order some breakfast now that you’re up. We’re meeting my dad in two hours.”

“You're taking me out,” he informs me as he gets out of bed, slapping my ass and making me yelp before hugging me from behind.

“I am, am I?”

“Yeah, just put it on my tab,” he kisses me then heads to the bathroom. “I’m taking a shower.”

I love the domesticity of having him here, sketching with him asleep beside me, and just being together as a whole. But my mind has regularly wandered to the uncertainty in all this, about what will happen when he remembers everything. Will he still feel the same about me? Will he revert to the sad, hermit man he was before? My vulnerability is rising to the surface, but another test for us will be my dad.

He’s never liked any of the men that showed interest in me. It never mattered to me because I didn’t like them either, but I want him to love Kent, I need him to. My dad has always been a reasonable man, never acting superior toward the middle and lower class like ninety-nine percent of those in our circle, and I’m hoping he keeps that open mind now.
